Quinta das Lagrimas 5*

Quinta das Lagrimas is a peaceful retreat set within an 18th-century palace and surrounded by 12 hectares of historic gardens in Coimbra. The estate is closely associated with the 14th-century love story of Prince Pedro and Inês de Castro.

According to legend, Pedro and Inês met in secret within the grounds of the Quinta. It is also said that Inês shed her final tears here when she was killed on the orders of King Afonso IV, Pedro’s father. Her blood is said to have stained the stone bed of the fountain that became known as the Fonte das Lágrimas—the Fountain of Tears—from which the estate takes its name.

The hotel has 55 rooms and suites divided between three areas: the Palace, Garden and Spa wings. Rooms within the palace have a more traditional character, while those in the Garden and Spa wings have a contemporary style. Depending on their location, rooms overlook the gardens, surrounding woodland or the city of Coimbra
