Eco Hotel Vila Galé Albacora 4*

Hotel Vila Galé Albacora occupies the former Arraial Ferreira Neto, a tuna-fishing camp built during the 1940s. The camp housed fishermen and their families during the tuna-fishing season and remained in operation until the early 1970s, when declining catches brought the activity to an end.

The site was later carefully restored and converted into an eco-hotel, preserving many of its original buildings. The former fishermen’s houses, workshops and warehouses now accommodate the hotel’s rooms, while the old chapel has also been retained and the former school has been converted into a children’s club.

The former bakery now houses a small museum dedicated to the region’s tuna-fishing heritage. Exhibits include historical documents, a model of the traditional almadrava fishing system and a film showing the tuna-catching process.

Located within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, the hotel is surrounded by lagoons and salt marshes, making it a good base for birdwatching and exploring the area’s wildlife. Boats to Tavira Island operate from the hotel’s jetty during the season, while the centre of Tavira is approximately ten minutes away by car.
